Jerome Reed, 34, of Peekskill, was rescued about five hours after the crash from a nearby marsh and charged with eluding, New Jersey State Police said.

Troopers were called to the single-vehicle crash at 1:08 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 1, Sgt. Philip Curry, a State Police spokesman, said. The crash occurred in the westbound E-ZPass lanes of the Pleasantville Toll Plaza, he said.

Before troopers arrived, Reed allegedly fled the vehicle on foot into a marshy area near the tolls, Curry said.

Reed was seen in the marshy area near the crash scene at about 6:20 a.m., Curry said.

Troopers with the help of Pleasantville police rescued Reed from the marsh, he said.

He was evaluated by EMS, but refused medical attention, Curry said.

Reed was charged with eluding and released pending a court appearance, he said.
